Commercial Washroom Hygiene Checklist for Cape Town Facilities
A practical reference checklist for facility managers and cleaning supervisors. Use this to assess your commercial washrooms against recommended hygiene standards for Cape Town commercial, school and hospitality environments.
Daily Washroom Checks (Every Operating Day)
Consumables: Toilet tissue stocked and accessible — all cubicles. Hand soap or foam soap available at all basins. Paper hand towels available or hand dryers operational. Hand sanitiser dispensers operational at entry points.
Cleanliness: Toilet bowls, seats and cisterns wiped and disinfected. Basin surfaces and taps wiped clean. Floors mopped and dry. Mirrors clean and streak-free. Bins emptied and relined.
Sanitary units: Sanitary bins are not full or overflowing. Units are sealed and odour-controlled. No visible leakage or damage to units.
Weekly Washroom Checks
Tile surfaces and grout lines scrubbed with appropriate sanitiser. Drain covers cleared and deodorised. Cubicle doors and handles disinfected with appropriate product. Cisterns checked for leaks or scaling. Air freshener dispensers checked and batteries/cartridges replaced if needed.
Sanitary bin liner count checked against expected usage — if bins are consistently full before scheduled collection, service frequency should be reviewed.
Monthly Service Checks (Hygiene Provider Visit)
Sanitary bins serviced — unit cleaned, liner removed and replaced, service record issued. Consumable dispensers checked and restocked. Any damaged dispensers reported and replaced. Air freshener cartridges replaced on schedule. Service sheet signed and filed in washroom hygiene folder.
Quarterly / Deep Clean Checklist
Full tile and grout deep scrub. Drain clearing and pipe flush. Cistern disinfection. Removable fittings removed and soaked in sanitiser solution. High-level surfaces (tops of cubicles, light fittings) dusted and wiped. Wall tiles cleaned from floor to ceiling.
Service Records Your Facility Should Maintain
A well-managed commercial facility keeps on-site: a washroom cleaning log (daily entries); hygiene service records from the service provider (issued on every collection visit); pest control treatment records; and a consumable delivery log if relevant.
For schools and healthcare facilities, keeping at least 12 months of service records on-site is good practice for internal facility management.
