A Practical Hygiene Checklist for Cape Town Schools

A straightforward hygiene checklist for school facility managers and administrators — covering daily routines, service scheduling and what to look out for between professional visits.

1. Washroom Checks

Washrooms should be checked at least once during the school day, and more frequently in high-traffic blocks. Walk through each ablution facility and check that basins are clean, toilet bowls are flushed and clear, and there are no signs of leaking or blockage.

Door handles, taps and other high-touch surfaces should be wiped down daily. A deep clean of tiles, grout, cisterns and drains is best scheduled during each school holiday period when the facility is not in use.

2. Sanitary Bin Servicing

Every female toilet cubicle should have a sealed sanitary bin. Bins should be checked regularly — if a bin is reaching capacity before the scheduled collection, service frequency may need to be increased.

Service frequency depends on your school’s learner population, facility usage and observed collection volumes. Monthly, fortnightly or weekly servicing may be appropriate depending on the facility. Discuss your school’s usage patterns with your service provider when setting up a contract.

3. Soap and Paper Supplies

Hand soap should be available at every basin during school hours. Check dispensers at the start of each school day and refill as needed. Schools that run out of soap regularly may benefit from a supply contract that includes automatic restocking on a schedule.

Toilet tissue and paper hand towels should also be checked and replenished daily. Keeping a small stock on-site reduces the risk of facilities running dry between deliveries.

4. Signs of Pest Activity

School kitchens, canteens, waste storage areas and older buildings can attract pests. Common signs to watch for include droppings near food storage or kitchen equipment, gnaw marks on packaging or fixtures, and cockroach activity in warm, damp areas such as under sinks or near drains.

If pest activity is noticed, report it to your service provider promptly. Scheduling a professional assessment early typically results in a less involved and less disruptive treatment than waiting until an infestation takes hold.

5. Term Break Deep Cleaning

School holidays are the ideal time for deep washroom cleaning, drain clearing and any pest treatments. These can be arranged in advance with your hygiene service provider — it helps to confirm dates several weeks before the break to ensure availability during the holiday period.

A thorough term-break deep clean typically covers tile scrubbing, cistern disinfection, drain clearing and deodorising, door handle and fixture sanitisation, and sanitary bin deep cleaning with liner replacement.

6. Scheduling Regular Service Visits

A consistent service schedule is one of the most practical ways to keep a school facility in good order. Rather than managing ad hoc requests, a service contract sets out regular visit dates for sanitary bin collection, washroom consumable restocking and planned deep cleaning — reducing the administrative burden on school staff.

Excellent Services works with schools across Cape Town to set up service packages that match the school’s size and timetable. Request a free school hygiene assessment to discuss what schedule would suit your facility.
